Tuesday, September 29 — Day 23

Four wars you have not been drilled on. No treaties today. No peace dates on the exam.

The clock

2 hours 30 minutes of work. A 20-minute break after every 40.

  • 9:30–10:10 — read the four wars below. One story each.
  • 10:10–10:30 — no phone.
  • 10:30–11:10 — cover the years and say them back. Then two multiplications on paper.
  • 11:10–11:30 — no phone.
  • 11:30–12:10 — only the war whose year you still mix up.
  • 12:10–12:30 — no phone.
  • 12:30–1:00 — exam, 18 questions.

Phones off until 1:30. Bar mitzvah reading is 20 minutes on its own page, not inside this block.

The four

  • Mexican-American War, 1846. The United States and Mexico fought over land that is now the southwest of the United States, including California and Texas as a border fight. It ended in 1848.
  • Spanish-American War, 1898. Short. The United States fought Spain. It took the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Cuba left Spanish rule.
  • Gulf War, 1990. Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990. A large coalition pushed Iraq back out in early 1991. This is not the Iraq War.
  • Iraq War, 2003. A different war, thirteen years later. The United States invaded Iraq itself. Do not trade this year with 1990.

The exam also has a few new multiplications and a few elements. It does not ask for a treaty.
